ELECTRICAL SAFETY DEMONSTRATIONS
Teaching the Next Generation to Use Electricity Safely and Wisely
At Freeborn Mower Electric Cooperative (FMEC), safety isn’t just something we talk about; it’s something we live every day. From maintaining reliable power lines to educating our youngest community members, our goal is simple: keep people safe around electricity.
That’s why we created the FMEC Safety Superstars Program, a free, hands-on learning experience for local schools and community events. Designed especially for 3rd–5th grade students, with an annual focus on 4th grade classrooms, this interactive program brings energy education and safety lessons to life.
What Students Experience:
During this one-hour classroom visit, FMEC staff use live demonstrations, visuals, and conversation to teach students:
-
Where electricity comes from and how it travels safely to their homes and schools
-
What makes a cooperative unique is that FMEC is owned by the very people it serves
-
How to use energy wisely, with simple habits that help families save electricity and money
-
How to stay safe around power lines, transformers, and electrical equipment
The highlight of the program is a live electric safety demonstration that shows the power of electricity in action and helps students learn how to stay safe and make smart choices around it. Students also get to see real line workers gear up close, ask questions, and even help demonstrate how safety equipment works.
Every presentation wraps up with a take-home coloring activity and safety tips for the whole family.
Why We Offer This Program:
As your local cooperative, FMEC is more than an energy provider; we’re a community partner. Our mission includes a responsibility to educate, inform, and protect the members we serve.
This Program Helps:
Prevent accidents by teaching kids what to do around downed wires, power lines, and electrical hazards
-
Invest in our communities through local education and outreach
-
Promote cooperative values like “Concern for Community” and “Education, Training, and Information”
-
Build lifelong energy awareness, encouraging safe and efficient habits that students can bring home
It’s one more way FMEC delivers on its promise to put people first because safety starts with education.
Teachers, schools, and community organizations within FMEC’s service territory are invited to request a presentation.
Each visit is led by trained FMEC team members and offered free of charge as part of our public safety mission.
